On June 17, 2015, white supremacist Dylann Roof killed nine people during a Bible study at Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Jennifer Pinckney and her daughter Malana were two of the only three survivors of the attack. Jennifer’s husband, South Carolina Senator Clementa C. Pinckney, was killed in the attack.

In conjunction with Christian outreach group The Impact Movement, Jennifer spoke at N.C. Central University on Sept. 27 to discuss her experience and its effect on her life.
