Durham’s Eastway Elementary, located in heart of northeast central Durham, serves 620 pre-K trhough 5th grade. The school serves a diverse student body, 50 percent of whom are African American. Ninety percent of Eastway’s students are eligible for the National School Lunch Program, compared to the 45 percent statewide average. It is ranked in the bottom 10 percent of North Carolina schools in reading and math scores. Shayla Holeman was previously the principal for two years at South Elementary in Person County.
