Step Show: highlight of homecoming

October 25, 2016

Is anyone else still recovering from all of the homecoming fun from this past week? The Ultimate Homecoming Experience was a success, if I do say so myself!

On Oct. 14 the Step Show set the tone for a lively weekend. Held in the McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium, N.C. Central University’s fraternities and sororities each took the stage and killed it.

The event was hosted by Jay Dukes, a professional entertainer and host known for his appearances in the college market. Between performances, Dukes had the crowd of more than 1,500 students and supporters laughing and dancing all night.

Phi Beta Sigma fraternity took the stage first, setting an intense tone for the competition.

Deja Spooney, mass communications senior and Zeta Phi Beta member, made her first appearance in an NCCU step show.

“It was a great experience. It took a lot of hard work and it was extremely tiring but all worth it,” said Spooney. “A lot of people don’t realize how much work we put in. They just get to see the finished product.”

The hard work did indeed pay off.  The Zetas won second place and took home a $750 prize.

Tamara Schley, criminal justice senior, also performed for the first time with her sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho.

“I have extreme stage fright so performing helped me face my fears,” said Schley. “I’m just happy I got to have this experience with my sisters before I graduate in December.”

Sigma Gamma Rho put on for their sorority and represented like champions, winning first place for the second year in a row and bringing in a cool $1,500.

Omega Psi Phi fraternity came through, did their thing and took home second place and $750 in prize money.

The Ice Cold Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha st ole the show, and first place, leaving everyone in awe of their dynamic moves. Not only did they incorporated DJ Khaled’s “I Got the Keys” into their routine, but they showed that, they did indeed, have the key to winning the competition.

“They did an amazing job. I think the win was well deserved,” said criminal justice senior Tysheema Collins.
