Wi-Fi to be fixed overnight, ITS says

September 14, 2016

For  N.C. Central University students who’ve had trouble accessing the internet, your frustration may be coming to an end.

An NCCU Information Technology Services official said Wednesday that the problem should be fixed by Thursday morning.

NCCU’s Wi-Fi was interrupted Saturday because of a campus-wide power outage. The power outage had been repaired by Sunday, but campus Wi-Fi was still out of service, according to an NCCU Police email.

Three days later, internet access hasn’t completely recovered, NCCU Network Services Director Joel Faison said.

“We have about 1,200 access points, and 128 are out,” he said. “So we’re running at about 80 or 90 percent.”

Problems with the Wi-Fi started when the outage caused some equipment to “totally shut off,” Faison said. ITS workers were unable to turn the equipment back on.

Now, ITS must replace the equipment, Faison said.

“We are scheduled to go in overnight around 4 a.m. or 5 a.m. to put in a replacement part,” he said.

Officials had to wait for a  vendor to deliver the new part, he explained.

Faison said NCCU internet users should experience a “noticeable difference” Thursday morning.
