Fall elections fill freshman, open SGA and royal court positions

September 19, 2018

The results of N.C. Central University’s 2018-19 fall elections were made available to the student body at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19 in the Alfonso Elder Student Union.

Positions set to be filled included the typical freshman assortment of royal court members and Student Government Association representatives alongside two upperclassmen spring appointments: Mr. Senior and Miss Junior, formerly held by Kelvin Techie and Lyric Tillman respectively. Both resigned in early August.

The first portion of the electoral event, a town hall-style program, began with a message from NCCU’s faculty senate chair-elect Dr. William Russell Robinson, who spoke about the senate itself and the importance of student involvement within it.

Emphasizing Robinson’s point, each present member of SGA’s previously-elected executive board described their elected positions, listed their current accomplishments in said position and explained their goals for the upcoming year.

The town hall was an bureaucratic turn of events after the freshman showcase in B.N. Duke Auditorium the night before. Similarly to the Mr. and Miss Pageant in the spring, candidates from the class of 2022 announced themselves and their platforms to the rest of their Eagle family, performed in various acts (including one with campus modeling troupe dé Haute Allure Fashion & Modeling) and plead their cases as to why they deserved to represent their class and university at large.

The results announced were as follows:

  • Mr. Freshman: Jeremy Williams (54.1%, 444 out of 821 freshman votes)
  • Miss Freshman: Hanya Boler
  • Freshman Class Senators (top five candidates): Jada Derr, Samyia Warren, Chayil Townsend, Jacob Irving and Justin Wright
  • Freshman Class Vice President: Caleef Robinson (64.3%, 528 votes)
  • Freshman Class President: Maya Bell (34.96%, 287 votes)
  • Sophomore Class Senators (top three candidates): Christopher Clodfelter, Nimare Dixon and Takiyah Bogues
  • Junior Class Senators (top three candidates): Destyni Hunt, Jalajayai Tate and Kinyana Marshall
  • Miss Junior: Joiya Lyles (unopposed)
  • Mr. Senior: Denzel Goodlin (unopposed)

The voting, which saw less than 1,000 participants in any of the four classes, took place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. the same day results were announced.
